Description of Work
For some years Sylvester's work has been concerned with exploring young lives: the fragility of relationships, the vulnerability of love and hope for the future. Best known for his high-resolution photograhs, Sylvester's imagery is littered with the detrius of popular culture - music videos, nights out and junk food. By placing such objects in relation to people, Sylvester shows how the most disposable elements of a disposable culture can be embodied with emotional intensity.
Sylvester is an exciting young artist who has achieved considerable critical success in Australia and overseas. For the past three years he has been nominated one of Australia's 50 most collectable artists in Australian Art Collector magazine. His work has recently been featured in several group exhibitions including Perfect For Every Occasion: Photography Today, Heide Musuem of Art, Melbourne; Special Reconnaissance, Gigantic Artspace, New York; Supernatural Artificial, Nanyang Academy of Fine Art, Singapore and Raised by Wolves, Art Gallery of Western Australia, Perth. Sylvester's work is held many collections including The National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria, Art Gallery of New South Wales and Art Gallery of Western Australia.
